概要:
We often associate democratic failure with highly visible violations of democratic norms including military coups, imprisonment or intimidation of the opposition, and major electoral fraud. This lecture examines a different form of potential democratic erosion, in which democratically-elected leaders employ legal but technocratic means to entrench their power. In Hungary's 2010 national parliamentary elections the Fidesz-Hungarian Civic Alliance party captured over two-thirds of the parliamentary seats, giving it super-majority power. Since 2010 Fidesz has used its authority to centralize power in controversial ways. What has Fidesz done and in what ways? Is it endangering democracy?
